NEW ENGLAND HOME

Subtly Salty

JULY-AUGUST 2019

In a feature by New England Home magazine, interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone of Digs Design Company undertook the transformation of a period-style residence in Newport's Historic Hill neighborhood. The client, a single man in his thirties with a penchant for entertaining, sought a modern, masculine aesthetic with a neutral palette that subtly acknowledged the home's coastal setting. He expressed his vision as "a California midcentury modern feel, but without sacrificing comfort and functionality."

Chiappone embraced this direction, steering clear of overtly beachy themes. She introduced textured elements such as grasscloth wall coverings and rattan barstools to infuse warmth and character into the space. The living area features a substantial linen sofa anchored by a Stark geometric rug, complemented by a playful multi-colored velvet lounge chair. Chiappone notes, "We added color and patterns in the carpet and toss pillows."

To enhance the room's focal point, builder Bob Ventura constructed a gas fireplace with a flat-panel TV above the mantel, flanked by window seats and bookshelves. Chiappone explains, "The shiplap fireplace and built-ins give a much-needed focal point to the space." In the dining area, a bronze-and-cream banquette paired with a cerused-oak table and a silver-gilded surf print subtly references the home's nautical environment without resorting to clichés.

The first-floor office serves as a cozy retreat, featuring a cork ceiling and walls, along with distinctive furnishings like a cowhide director-style chair and hardwood filing cabinets. This space exemplifies Chiappone's ability to blend functionality with unique design elements. Throughout the home, her thoughtful integration of varied textures and patterns achieves a harmonious balance between modern design and the home's historic context, resulting in a sophisticated yet comfortable retreat.
