Award Winner - Historic Rejuvenation

2020

In a prestigious recognition by Best in American Living, Digs Design Company, led by principal designer Jocelyn Chiappone, was honored with a Gold Award for the "Historic Rejuvenation" of a Providence, Rhode Island residence. This nationally registered historic home, built in 1867, had undergone several renovations over the years, leading to the loss of its original charm. Chiappone and her team aimed to modernize the space while respecting its historic essence.

To achieve an open floor plan, two structural walls were removed, including the wall between the existing galley kitchen and dining room, and the wall on the left side of the foyer, which connected to both rooms. The design team installed laminated veneer lumber to support the load of the removed walls, and a coffered ceiling was built around the new structural beams, carefully matched to doors and windows. The focal point of the new kitchen is a custom curved range hood with polished brass trim and rivets, complemented by custom cabinets and crafted walnut accents with brass hardware. The kitchen island features granite with a walnut apron and custom-turned 6-inch top tapered matching walnut legs. The restructuring of interiors allows for a cozy seating area in the kitchen to make the most of gathering and entertaining.

The judges praised the attention to detail, noting that the new kitchen feels more appropriate to the house and looks high-end. They highlighted the arch detail as both historical and progressive.

This accolade underscores Chiappone's commitment to creating spaces that are both livable and extraordinary, blending classic and modern elements to breathe new life into historic properties.
