HOUSE BEAUTIFUL
Incredible Kitchen Series
MAY 2020
In a House Beautiful feature, interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Company, transformed her family's Matunuck, Rhode Island, residence into a luminous, multifunctional haven. The goal was to revitalize the home into their "forever home" by converting a series of dark, back-of-house rooms into a bright, multifunctional kitchen.
The kitchen's centerpiece is an expansive island featuring Calacatta Bluette marble, reminiscent of the nearby ocean with its blue and gray hues. Chiappone's husband discovered the marble, and she noted, "It reminded him of the ocean down the street, with bits of blue and gray." To accommodate the island's size without visible seams, they incorporated an end-grain butcher block, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
Functionality was paramount, leading to the integration of 14 appliances, many concealed behind custom cabinetry. Chiappone remarked on their utility, saying, "And the crazy thing is, we use them all. Even the Wolf steam oven gets used daily—it's great for cooking vegetables quickly."
A modern countertop fireplace adds warmth and ambiance, becoming a cherished feature. Chiappone shared, "This is one of my favorite elements in the room. It adds so much coziness." The space serves multiple purposes, from morning coffee rituals to family gatherings, embodying Chiappone's talent for creating spaces that are both livable and extraordinary.
