Classic Spirit
SPRING 2022
In a feature titled "Classic Spirit" in Cottage Style magazine, interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Company, showcases her expertise in blending traditional elements with coastal aesthetics in a Little Compton, Rhode Island, cottage renovation. The homeowners sought a summer retreat that harmonized with the town's modest architecture and accommodated their collection of antiques and family heirlooms.
Chiappone remarks, "We wanted the interiors to take a step back." To achieve this, she created a neutral foundation with sandy wide-plank oak floors and cream-white walls, allowing the home's natural surroundings and the owners' cherished possessions to take center stage. She adds, "The goal of this project was, 'How can we integrate the homeowners' beloved pieces while keeping it really fresh and casual and more of a summer house?'"
The design thoughtfully incorporates various textures and colors. In the sunroom, wicker chairs and an antique lamp with a tortoiseshell shade complement a light geometric carpet. The living room features a navy brushed-cotton sectional paired with dark wicker chairs and a white coffee table. Chiappone's approach blends overstuffed upholstery, seagrass carpets, and a mix of lighter-tone tables with dark wooden antiques, creating a curated and welcoming atmosphere.
Highlighting the importance of integrating personal artifacts, Chiappone notes, "The paintings are beautiful. It was so nice to have them." She successfully combined the homeowners' traditional tastes with a relaxed, coastal feel, resulting in a home that is both timeless and comfortable.
