BOSTON HOME

Spring Fever

2024

In a recent feature by Boston Home, interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Company, showcased her expertise in transforming a 1920s Cape Cod–style residence in Wellesley into a vibrant, pattern-filled sanctuary. Collaborating with architect Mike Tartamella, Chiappone reimagined the home's interior to reflect the natural beauty of its surroundings, drawing inspiration from the colors of spring and fall.

Chiappone's fearless approach to design is evident in the living room, where she upholstered the sofa in Quadrille’s bold “Les Indiennes” fabric, a choice she had envisioned for years. The homeowner embraced this daring selection, reminiscing about a similarly patterned sofa from the 1970s. To balance the dynamic upholstery, Chiappone incorporated light lemon walls, a beige rug, and solid-colored accents, creating a harmonious and inviting space. She explains, “Light lemon walls and a beige rug provide a neutral foundation, while the solid color lamps, side tables, and grasscloth behind the television strengthen the cohesive base.”

The kitchen maintains a crisp aesthetic, with strategic pops of blue in the backsplash tiles, barstools, and lampshades to prevent a monochromatic feel. Chiappone notes, “The three blue elements—the backsplash tiles, barstools, and lampshades—keep this white kitchen from feeling monochromatic.” This thoughtful layering of neutrals and selective color infusions exemplifies Chiappone's ability to create spaces that are both timeless and full of character.

In the primary bedroom, Chiappone skillfully played with scale by layering a trellis pattern on the chair cushions against a grid-patterned wallcovering. She advises that using pieces like a chair with a wood frame and caning, rather than a fully upholstered chair, offers the opportunity to introduce bold patterns in a more limited and controlled manner.

This project exemplifies Jocelyn Chiappone's talent for integrating bold patterns and colors with classic design elements, resulting in interiors that are both sophisticated and reflective of the homeowner's personality. Her ability to draw inspiration from natural landscapes and seasons ensures that each space resonates with warmth and authenticity, solidifying her reputation as a visionary in interior design.
