BEAUTIFUL KITCHENS & BATHS

In a feature in Beautiful Kitchens & Baths, interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Company, showcases her expertise in blending historical charm with contemporary design in a Providence, Rhode Island kitchen renovation.

Chiappone transformed a cramped galley kitchen into a spacious, open-concept area by removing walls and repurposing space from a pantry and powder room. This expansion created a central gathering spot for the homeowners, Dan Parent and Mary Halpin, who desired a space that honored the home's rich history while accommodating modern living.

Central to the design is a walnut-trimmed island topped with honed Danby marble, serving as both a functional workspace and a visual focal point. Chiappone thoughtfully selected materials and elements to balance boldness with subtlety, stating, "Take risks but trust your gut. It's OK to introduce bold elements." She incorporated brass strapping on the vent hood, appreciating its contrast with the kitchen's gray tones. The island's slim wooden legs and acrylic stools add sophistication and a touch of luxury, reminiscent of a posh European bar. Chiappone notes, "The upholstered stools create a bit of luxury and a sense of place."

The design also respects the home's historical context, featuring arched glass-front cabinets and a custom backsplash of Calacatta and Thassos marble tile. A coffered ceiling adds a luxurious, polished look, blending seamlessly with the home's original details. Homeowner Dan Parent remarks, "It really is the best of both worlds... historical appeal blended with the best of the new."

Chiappone's meticulous approach exemplifies her ability to honor historical elements while introducing modern design, creating spaces that are both functional and reflective of her clients' tastes.
