A Rhode Island summer home gets a coastal upgrade
2025
In this feature by Three Sixty Five Collective, Jocelyn Chiappone, founder of Digs Design Company, masterfully reimagines a 1987 New England shingle-style summer home in Rhode Island, enhancing its coastal charm while preserving its architectural integrity.
Embracing the home's original elements—mahogany windows, brass fittings, and shingle cladding—Chiappone focused on elevating rather than reinventing the space. "We were immediately drawn to its classic coastal bones," she notes. By retaining existing tiles and cabinets in the pool bath and kitchen, she demonstrates that "smart, budget-conscious choices can still lead to beautiful and luxurious results.”
The design introduces a nautical aesthetic through a restrained palette of navy, mahogany, and brass, capturing "the essence of Newport’s coastal elegance without slipping into kitsch." A standout feature is the navy blue Star range, color-matched to the cabinetry, serving as the focal point in the renovated pool kitchen. Chiappone also transformed the pool bath into a "jewel box" by incorporating a vibrant Pierre Frey mosaic wallpaper, complementing the existing blue tile and infusing the space with intentionality and modern flair.
Outdoor living areas were thoughtfully designed to offer distinct experiences, from casual poolside entertaining to shaded retreats, all while ensuring durability against the elements. Chiappone's approach underscores her commitment to creating spaces that are both functional and enchanting, reflecting Digs Design Company's reputation for delivering timeless, bespoke interiors.
